Vita in Machina: Life in the Machine
Another amazing figma stop-motion from MoonshineAnimations. Extremely impressive work for being completed within 72 hours.

Introducing Insane Black☆Rock Shooter from the 2012 anime Black☆Rock Shooter. Insane Black☆Rock Shooter (IBRS) is the alternate form of Black☆Rock Shooter (BRS) and the final antagonist of the anime series. IBRS comes into being when Mato undergoes a massive emotional trauma (I won’t say what because of spoilers), and BRS transforms into IBRS.
IBRS was an exclusive figure that was only bundled with the Blu-ray of the anime. This makes her extremely rare and super expensive for a figma figure. You can find her on ebay, but she has a hefty price. Around $200 for just the Figma package itself, or about $250-$300 bundled with the Blu-ray set. I bought Insane Black☆Rock Shooter (figma only) as a birthday gift to myself this past July and she became my all time favorite figma.
I love Black☆Rock Shooter. The animation version was my first figma ever and she started my figma collecting career. I always saw IBRS and wanted to get her, but that price tag was always too rich for my blood. I eventually caved, because how many times do you turn 25? Ok, enough back-story, time for the review!
Insane Black☆Rock Shooter’s design is is my favorite of all the Other Selves, with Strength being a close second. It is familiar enough so that your know that she was originally BRS, yet drastically different. First off, she is very heavily armored. From thighs down, her legs are covered in greaves, similar to Insane Black☆Gold Saw. Unlike BGS, her knee armor has a separate articulated piece, which is a really nice detail. Her greaves are very angular, ending in many sharp points. It looks great, but those points are high contact areas, so you may run the risk of paint scuffing/chipping off on the tips. If you don’t notice microscopic scratches like I do, then go nuts! Her feet look great, but in terms of stability, it leaves a lot to be desired. She has high heels that are surrounded by an nice looking armor piece. Since the feet are so small, she does have balance issues without her stand. It’s not completely hopeless like BGS (who can’t stand AT ALL without a stand), but it’s more similar to Labrys. She can hold simple poses on her own, but for more dynamic stuff, the stand is required. Her upper torso reveals a bare midriff and instead of BRS’s coat, she has a tattered jacket over her bikini-top. Her upper arms have slightly different armor from one another and, and her left shoulder has a pauldron with a white cross. Her hands are claws, similar to BGS and Dead Master. Her head is the most familiar part of her. Her hairstyle and face are pretty much the same, except everything blue is replaced with purple. Her eyes also have a red pupil instead of white, which looks really menacing. Finally, she has a sort of helmet/armor piece over her left twintail.
For articulation, it’s what you’d expect from a standard figma.. Since she’s rocking short shorts, her leg movement is unhindered and her arms have pretty free range of movement. Her twintails are on figma joints, so you can rotate move position them for more dynamic scenes. As mentioned before, her knee armor and shoulder pauldron are articulated as well.
In regards to paint application, Insane Black☆Rock Shooter is amazing. The purple gradient in her hair is much more pronounced than the blue on BRS, so it looks really good. The level of detail in her eyes always impresses me. They’re purple, but they have this little red pupil in there that just causes me to get lost in them. All the other BRS girls have white pupils. Her armor and weapons all look weathered from battle. They’re painted a metallic black with dry-brushed gold/bronze to give that worn out look.
For accessories, she comes with everything you’d expect from the villainous version of Black☆Rock Shooter:
Overall, Insane Black☆Rock Shooter is a great figure. She looks incredible, and her weapons would make any of my other figmas quiver in fear. However, unless you have money to burn or you want to have the complete set of Other Selves, I can’t really recommend her, at least to the casual figma collector. Her price is ridiculous for a figma and even I admit it. In spite of that, I don’t regret buying her. She is the centerpiece of all my BRS figmas.
